2008-2009, volunteer participant in a literacy project, which has culminated in a book published by Goose Lane, called "Breaking the Word Barrier." Participated in the "Breaking the Word Barrier Road Show."
Numerous appearances at high schools: Sussex Regional, Hampton High, Kennebecasis High, and many high schools in Moncton and Saint John. Talks, readings. In 2009, started a writer's club at the Sussex Regional High School, called the "The Writer's Guild."
Participated in "guest adults reading aloud to students", Sussex Regional High School.

Started, with Barbara McKay, the Tracey Fox McQuade Memorial Scholarship, to be awarded to a student at Harbourview High, to honour the manager of a Saint John Cole's Bookstore who died tragically in 2008.

Environment: with husband Peter Powning, embarked on a long-term commitment to personal CO2 reduction. Included energy audit, home renovation, increase in own food production, purchase of Smart car, solar water heating, etc. An active proponent whenever possible through writing, photography, letters, and articles. Invited by David Suzuki to contribute to a book of essays, "When the Wild Comes Leaping Up" (see resumé.)
Sussex Regional Waste Disposal Committee: member for 4 years in early 90's during the period landfill siting was being determined. Visited waste disposal sites across North America, did extensive study, attended weekend workshops and meetings in Sussex and Fredericton, visited potential sites and interviewed concerned landowners and citizens.
Sussex Local Service District: president for 4 years, during the same period as Waste Disposal Committee. Attended local meetings, and assessed local needs, especially concerning new local fire hall.
Gardener: has grown all family food since 1971. Stores home-grown organic potatoes, beets, cabbages, carrots, parsnips, onions, garlic, chard, corn, green beans, dried beans, herbs, etc. Has written and photographed her gardens, has been active in promoting gardening through articles and photographs.
French Immersion: active proponent. Was instrumental in getting F.I. into the Sussex School District in 1983. Spent the summer collecting names of children, presented to the school board. Currently studying French, and involved in efforts to retain early French Immersion.
Project Ploughshares Sussex: 1983 - 1987. Peace and disarmament, international development. Founder and president.
