1990
Volkswagon Synchro Westfalia

This
much loved Westy is looking for a new home.

That's dirt on the side not rust!
The
Yurt's particulars are:
It's
a 1990 with about 134,000 km. (78,000 miles) on it.
The original engine
was replaced at 97,000 km.(58,000 m.) with a 1997, 2.0 L. Jetta
engine. This engine conversion means a bit more power, better
fuel efficiency and no more Vanagon engine woes (Vanagon syndrome,
warped heads etc.)
The Synchro is the
great VW all-wheel drive power train. It handles beautifully in
all weather and road conditions and is capable of getting to some
quite exotic camping spots. We have not used it as an off-road
vehicle except for short distances through fields or on beaches
to park for camping. It has a 5 speed transmission with a differential
lock mechanism for deep snow or sand, or getting unstuck in the
unlikely event that you do..
We've done a lot of
work on this camper and it's in great shape. We've kept it Rust
Checked every other year, just had new brakes installed (May '05),
a new clutch, a rebuilt transmission, new shocks all around, oil
and temperature gauges installed, new starter, new muffler and
pipes in May '05, and of course done regular maintenance.
We
had it professionally painted last year when some rust spots began
to appear along the caulked seams and around the rear wheel flares.
There was no rot or perforations, just surface rust and the usual
dings and scratches for a vehicle this age. That's all been carefully
recaulked and refinished with a complete paint job and an overcoat
of clearcoat. The body is in great shape. We bought it in British
Columbia in 1999. It lives in an unheated garage here in New Brunswick.
It
has a new 3 window canvas pop-top, custom double mattress, trailer
hitch, roof racks, a great sound system (FM/AM radio and casette
player with a jack for an external CD player).
It
has window screens for the side door, rear door and the skylight,
all the curtains are in good shape and in working order, it has
a new propane tank for the stove and refridgerator. It has a black,
custom-made bra.
It
does not have air conditioning or a propane heater. There is a
rear heater that runs off the engine, in addition to the regular
heater.
It
has two sets of tires:
4 - LT195/75 R14 all season tires, nearing the end of their useful life
4 -
Michelin XC Mud and Snow studded winter tires with lots of tread
and studs in good shape.
I
won't claim that this camper is in perfect condition, it is 18
years old. The problems it has are little things like a bit of
interior wear (no holes or rips). There isn't much to list. It
does require maintenance and we can't guarantee something won't
go wrong with it. We just fix things as they come up. Pretty well
all the major components have been replaced with new or rebuilt
parts (brakes, clutch, suspension, starter, transmission, engine)
so I'd guess it's got a good many years of good camping left in
it. It seats 5 and can haul quite a load when it needs to as well.
Have
a look at http://www.gowesty.com/directory.html
(and look at "we've got vans for sale") (also
try http://www.gowesty.com/forsale/soldindex_VANO.html)to
see what similar vehicles are selling for. Ours has had the care
of people who weren't planning on selling and now unexpectedly
need to.
