I love books as objects. I like the smell of the pages (British ink has a distinctive smell), the way the pages riffle under my thumb, the font, the dingbats, the width of the margins. The cover, however, is what's crucial to my picking the book up off the shelf.Book designers are so important, and yet they get only a tiny little mention. They have read the book, discussed it with the editor and the marketing team, and then have sat silently, pondering, playing with colour, image, and space, all to make that miraculous thing: the book that leaps into your hand.I have photographed all my books to celebrate the people who made their covers. I'll post them here, with some comments. ... See MoreSee Less

The cover of my new novel, The Sister's Tale, features the rather sad and expressive boots of the sisters, Enid and Flora. Hooray to book designer Talia Abramson! I masked up and went into one shoe store, just one, for my only shoe shopping outing since March 2020...and look what was waiting for me. The perfect boots. Sometimes when I'm immersed in writing novels set in the past, especially the 1880's, I long to dress in costume of the period. These boots make me feel like Flora Salford, the main character of the novel.#thesisterstale#amwriting#knopfcanada ... See MoreSee Less

I meant to add a hello picture to the last post. Here's what I'm doing today, the final FINAL proof of The Sister's Tale. I run a ruler under each sentence. A gentle dusk falls over our valley. We wait for tomorrow's snow. ... See MoreSee Less

Happy, and BETTER, New Year! Here is my gift to you, a new novel, The Sister's Tale, due May 25, but available now for pre-order from all the usual places! I recommend placing an order with your favourite local bookseller. The Sister's Tale will take you back to 1887, when orphaned children are sent to workhouses, sisters can be separated by an ocean, men still go to sea in square-rigged ships, and women begin to fight for their rights. All during 2020, my wonderful editor Craig Pyette and I worked to bring this novel to its best possible form. He worked from the heart of pandemic beseiged Toronto, I worked from quiet, isolated New Brunswick. Here, finally, is what the book will look like. I love the beautiful cover by Talia Abramson, and the gorgeous interior design. Now the production team sweeps into action, and one of these days, I'll hold the actual book in my hands.I'll keep you posted!May the darkness of so much anxiety lessen, may our hearts be lighter in this new year. Best wishes to all. ... See MoreSee Less
