Mutable Self

I incorporate sticks (cast in bronze) as a reference to humans as being part of nature, rather than being somehow separate or outside of nature. This piece stems from a simple notion about being “natural”, but also about the power of influences and how they shape our lives; both knowledge and ignorance can have powerful effects; ideas large and small shape the way we are. The various elements of this piece make oblique reference to these notions. While these thoughts may inform my work, I don’t expect anybody to draw these exact feelings or ideas from what I make. I am engaged in non-verbal communication through sculpture and hope that they convey some of the sense of the drama and mystery of “self”.
